This is new cooperative of women who grow sesame, maize and sorghum. The cooperative is located in San Augustín, Malpaisillo, a municipality of Leon. It was officially registered in November 15, 2009 and consists of 23 members, 16 women and 7 men. They have begun to work and seek funding to move forward together. They have received support from the European Union through FENACOOP to build a grain storage facility (corn, sorghum and sesame seeds). FENACOOP is donating 50% of the center, and the cooperative is putting their 50% through labor | hours and maintence of the center. The land where the center is built is leased for 20 years by one of the members of the cooperative. Currently the members are putting a fence around the center with money from the cooperative.
They will be storing 65 quintals (6500 pounds) of corn in the storage center. We expect prices of corn to rise, and when they do, they will sell the corn, and make more of a profit than they would have by selling it now in the time of harvest (because they prices are low). This is their first loan with La Base. |
